What is Botox Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is made from botulinum toxin type A, a highly purified protein used to temporarily relax muscles. We also offer alternatives called Dysport® and Jeuveau® that work in a similar way. Very tiny amounts of BOTOX, Dysport or Jeuveau are injected into specific facial muscles, causing a local relaxation. The lines and wrinkles gradually smooth out and new creases are prevented from forming. Other facial muscles, like those needed to raise the eyebrows, are not affected so a natural expression is maintained.
What Does Botox Help?
At Skin Spectrum, our providers are extremely skilled and experienced in the use of BOTOX, Dysport, and Jeuveau, both proactively, to prevent early signs of aging, as well as to treat a variety of immediate concerns, including:
- Vertical lines between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose
- Squint lines or crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Platysmal muscle bands (vertical lines) often visible on the neck
- Lower facial muscles such as the masseters (to lessen the squareness and fullness of the lateral jawline)

In addition to being effective on its own, many women and men choose BOTOX, Dysport, and Jeuveau as part of a “combineese” treatment plan. This approach to non-surgical facial rejuvenation combines multiple treatments like BOTOX with dermal fillers and Thermage® skin tightening, and a variety of other peels, microdermabrasion, micropen, and other laser and light source treatments for a synergistic effect. Our providers will perform a comprehensive assessment of your aesthetic concerns during your initial consultation and develop a plan to address those concerns.
What Can I Expect?
Treatment involves administration of very small amounts of BOTOX, Dysport, or Jeuveau into the underlying muscles using an ultra-fine needle. Because the injections may sting slightly, anesthetic topical cream is available to make the procedure more comfortable. The length of your appointment will depend on the areas being treated but is usually about 10 to 30 minutes.
It’s likely no one will notice that you have had the treatment right afterward because the improvements appear gradually. BOTOX, Dysport, and Jeuveau take effect in as little as one to two days. Improvements generally last three to six months and are maintained with touch-up treatments every three to six months. Often results last longer with touch-ups than after the initial treatment.
Treatment for Sweating
Sweat glands of the skin are responsible for perspiration and the excessive perspiration that some people experience. Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) can be alleviated with injections of BOTOX directly into the underarm skin or skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. BOTOX can block the release of the chemical responsible for stimulating the sweat glands. A single treatment session can provide months of relief, and injections are repeated once or twice a year to maintain dryness.
Side Effects
Side effects are rare, and our experienced providers take great care to avoid them. Occasionally, the administration of a neuromodulator can affect an unintended muscle group, resulting in the temporary droop of an eyebrow or a smile, which returns to normal once the neuromodulator has been metabolized by the body. Other potential side effects include bruising and swelling at the injection site, and some patients experience a mild temporary headache. Overall, neuromodulators are very safe and are used throughout the body to treat a wide range of medical conditions.
